Home Maintenance

Maintaining Your Fireplace This Winter

As the cold weather sets in, your fireplace becomes more than just a feature—it’s the heart of your home, keeping things warm and cozy. But to keep it running safely and efficiently all winter, regular maintenance is a must. Whether you have a wood-burning or gas fireplace, this guide will walk you through simple upkeep tips to keep your home safe and your fires burning beautifully.

Maintaining a Wood-Burning Fireplace

A traditional wood-burning fireplace brings warmth and charm, but it also requires regular care to prevent problems like excess smoke, poor airflow, or even chimney fires.

1. Clean Out the Ashes

  • After every few fires, scoop out most of the ashes, but leave a thin layer (about an inch) to help insulate future fires.

  • Store ashes in a metal container with a lid, away from your home, to prevent accidental fires.

2. Watch for Creosote Buildup

  • Creosote is a flammable, sticky substance that builds up inside chimneys when wood burns. Too much can be dangerous.

  • If you notice a strong smoky smell or black, tar-like buildup, it’s time for a professional chimney cleaning—ideally once a year.

3. Burn the Right Kind of Wood

  • Use seasoned hardwoods like oak or maple. They burn cleaner and create less creosote buildup.

  • Avoid burning softwoods like pine or wood that’s wet, as they produce more smoke and soot.

4. Check the Chimney and Damper

  • Make sure the damper (the flap inside your chimney) opens and closes easily.

  • Look for blockages like leaves, bird nests, or debris, which can cause smoke to back up into your home.

5. Clean the Fireplace Doors and Screen

  • If your fireplace has glass doors, clean off any built-up soot with a fireplace-safe glass cleaner.

  • Make sure the metal screen is in good shape to keep sparks from flying into your home.

Maintaining a Gas Fireplace

Gas fireplaces are low-maintenance compared to wood-burning ones, but they still need regular care to keep them running safely and efficiently.

1. Check the Burner and Pilot Light

  • Dust and dirt can build up in the burner, which might cause uneven flames or trouble lighting. Wipe it down gently if needed.

  • If your pilot light (the small flame that stays lit) keeps going out, it might need professional servicing.

2. Keep the Glass Clean

  • Over time, a white haze can form on the glass from burning gas.

  • Use a non-abrasive fireplace glass cleaner to keep it clear and looking great.

3. Look for Gas Leaks

  • If you ever smell gas (a rotten egg odor), turn off the fireplace immediately, open windows, and call a professional.

  • Check for loose connections or any unusual hissing sounds when the gas is on.

4. Test Carbon Monoxide and Smoke Detectors

  • Even though gas fireplaces burn cleanly, they still produce carbon monoxide, which needs proper ventilation.

  • Make sure your carbon monoxide and smoke detectors are working and have fresh batteries.

5. Get a Professional Inspection

  • Once a year, have a fireplace technician check your gas lines, vents, and ignition system to catch any issues early.
